Between Cusco and Urubamba are two of its best-known attractions, in which agricultural experimentation and the collection of salt transform the hills and valleys
From a bird's-eye view, the salt pans of Maras look like a white spot between the multicolored green of the Sacred Valley and the Urubamba mountain range. From the earth it is gleaming and people work in silence. You walk through the ridges, surrounded by small streams, in an almost vertical slope. They are about 600 pools of salt, about five square meters each, in which three types of salt are extracted by evaporation: first, second and third categories, according to the purity they have.
From the Inca Empire, the families of Maras and Pichingoto extract the salt, as if they were small farms, that later sell for quintales in the markets of Urubamba, Cusco and Izcuchaca. They claim that it has medicinal properties, more and more, it is found and used in bioferias, supermarkets, restaurants and hotels, sometimes at prices that multiply several times that obtained by the collector of the valley.
